I would suggest starting a good multi-effects, if you want to keep the amplifier. The sound is not as good as separate analog pedals, but playing with a lot of different effects and see what you want. Options distortion is certainly better than the Ibanez overdrive recently. Many groups and use multi-effects with large amplifiers (+ 100 watts) for concerts. You can also use a small microphone amplifier with a PA or run directly into a PA system. They are usually not considered enough for the professional quality of the recording.

Maximum Overdrive in most practical amplifiers just sucks, especially for heavier styles and there's nothing you can do, but you use a separate distortion pedal and maybe some effects. Although some modeling amps with onboard effects are pretty good in those days. If you can swing $ 100 per watt Line 6 Spider 15 - I think it would be really, really hAppy buy anything anymore. The metal channels are crazy, and it sounds great chorus and other nice effects to make it good clean. Possession Digitech multi-effects pedal might be a better option, but because you could buy a very cheap price basis and 100 watts in the way, if you ever start it, with a drummer and always want to use and Digitech distortion effects.

Also, remember that the cars can be very important. Cheap Vans usually have a "deaf," which means "mud" wimpy sound output does not distort easily. May be an update of at least one of their vehicles in order, if you still have problems after following a good effects pedal or amplifier.
